The Book Study: “Hope Which Does Not Disappoint”

In Canto 25 of Paradiso, as part of his catechesis on the theological virtues of faith, hope and charity, Dante encounters the soul of St James. St James is the one to question him on hope, through three questions: ‘What is hope? How has it come to blossom in your mind? Whence did it come to you?’ Beatrice answers the second question on Dante's behalf: “there is no son of the Church Militant more rich in hope.” Dante’s answer to the third question points to Scripture: he was brought to hope first through the psalms of David, and then by reading the Epistle of St James. This book study takes Dante’s answer as an invitation to consider the Book of Psalms and the Epistle of St James as texts that speak profoundly to us of hope. Fr Crouse's 1994 address, “Hope Which Does Not Disappoint,” which exhorts us to seek the renewal of Christian spiritual life fundamentally through the renewal of the virtues of faith, hope and charity, will help our inquiry to situate hope among the 'trinity of virtues, the unity of grace.
